Maryam Abacha university degrees not recognised – NUC

The National Universities Commission haswarned that degrees obtained from Maryam Abacha American University of Niger Republic (MAAUN) are sub-standard and will not be accepted in Nigeria, saying henceforth such certificates would not be recognised as a means of seeking employment or doing other legitimate business in Nigeria. The NUC Director of Information and Public Relations, Malam Ibrahim Yakasai, handed down the warning while briefing newsmen on Thursday in Abuja. According to him, NUC has been inundated with inquiries from some Nigerian students who have been offered admission in MAAUN on part time with a graduation time of four semesters. He listed some of the programmes as Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science, Public Health, among others. He explained that “in Nigeria, the duration for a full-time degree programme is not less than three years for direct entry and at least six years for part-time. We’re yet to receive bailout promised by Buhari, Govs cry out

36 state governors cried out, yesterday, over the worsening economic condition in the country and the failure of the Federal Government to give them the bailout funds promised by President Muhammadu Buhari. The governors at their meeting which started Wednesday night and ended in the early hours of yesterday, complained that the comprehensive relief package designed by the Federal Government to salvage the economic crisis of the states was yet to be given to them. The governors also expressed concern over the exchange rate of the dollar to the naira as well as other foreign currencies which has affected the nation’s economy. They have, therefore, resolved to meet the President again over the issue. 12 of the 36 states of the federation were said to be owing their workers more than $550 million in salaries and allowances, with some workers not paid for 7 months. Newborn baby girl found fatally stabbed in Wallsend home in Newcastle

Police are questioning the mother of a baby girl after the newborn was found with fatal stab wounds in a house in Newcastle this morning. Emergency services were called to the house in Curry Street at Wallsend at 9:00am. They found the body of the baby, thought to be about six weeks old. It is understood the girl suffered wounds to her throat, however police would not comment on her injuries. Her 26-year-old mother was arrested and is being questioned by police. Authorities were called to the home by a family member. Superintendent John Gralton said a report was being prepared for the coroner. "It's a very tragic set of circumstances here today, and our hearts go out to other members of the family and friends of this family," he said. Neighbours say the family kept to themselves and they are horrified this has happened in their neighbourhood. Broadmeadows man arrested for alleged racial abuse and assault on Melbourne train

A 20-year-old Broadmeadows man has been arrested over an alleged racial abuse incident and assault on a Melbourne train. Three woman got on a train at Melbourne Central station heading for Craigieburn on May 15 and were racially abused by two men sitting near them. The women got off the train at North Melbourne. Another passenger, a 37-year-old Ringwood man, spoke to the men about their behaviour and was allegedly assaulted, a police statement said. The victim, who suffered minor facial injuries, got off the train and reported the matter to police. Victoria Police said the Broadmeadows man was arrested this morning and is expected to be charged with assault-related offences.

Gunman kills 2 people and injures 7 in a Louisiana movie theatre

A 58 year old white gunman opened fire on movie goers last night in a Louisiana movie theater, killing 3 people, including himself and injuring as many as 7 people, some of whom are in critical condition, a police official said. City Marshal Brian Pope said that the gunman opened fire at the Grand Theatre in Lafayette, Louisiana where people were watching the comedy, 'Trainwreck' before turning the gun on himself. No one knows his motive for the shooting yet. Police are still investigating. Gov of Louisiana, Gov Bobby Jindal says the gun man shot 2 friends who are friends were together when the gunman started shooting. He said he was told one friend took the bullet for her friend and in the process stopped the shooter from killing more people. His name hasn't been released yet. Will update as I get more info.
